Is Glyphosate used in Thailand ?

The plan to ban Glyphosate in December 2019 got dropped by the Thai government after a massive lobbying campaign of Bayer and the American Embassy which was made public by news agency Reuters. The Thai Government then just declared Glyphosate a “regulated substance”, mainly for use in commercial agriculture, but without any control on dealers, or intention that farmers stop the use of glyphosate.

How is the situation today?

Glyphosate products at Lazada Thailand

Thai Farmer spraying pesticides

Just a simple google search reveals 3000 glyphosate products on offer just at Lazada in Thailand and more than 1000 documented buyers of just one single product offer. Users are giving 5 star ratings to Glyphosate products and are happy to continue.

Since Lazada is mainly a source for medium and small farmers, we have to expect to find glyphosate on vegetables and fruits not only in the supermarkets, but at many small shops and street vendors everywhere. In general the small farmers don't think much about it, they are just happy to get rid of pests immediately and they trust big companies like Bayer, that Glyphosate is save to use.

How is Glyphosate in the western world?

“ In 2020, Monsanto (now Bayer) offered almost $11 billion to settle more than 100,000 Roundup cancer claims. As of August 2023, more than 4,000 Roundup cancer lawsuits were pending.”
